What is Functional Movement?

Evolutionary our bodies learned to move in very specific ways.

To walk and to run.

To push and pull with our arms/shoulders.

To throw.

To turn – in segments and the whole body.

Its very simple really. But training/exercising these movements is not quite so simple.

The base idea of Functional Movement is to be able to keep movement going as deep into old age as possible.

This doesn’t mean compete at Olympic level at 76, it means getting up out of a chair or getting up off the floor, playing with children, gardening or going for walks.

Who Benefits From This?

Most of these courses I am filming are based around older folk who don’t move much and who need to get some form of movement in their lives.

Seriously overweight with restricted movement are the people I am basing this program around.

But the functional weight training is not age restrictive except for the heaviness of the weights.

Also there has been a large amount of research come out lately that says “building muscle helps cognitive function”.

So Functional Movement is for anyone who wants to think and move into the later years of their lives.

Mindful??? HUH???

Every piece of exercise needs to be mindful and functional.

This is at odds with gym industry thinking.

This becomes difficult when you are already 20-60-100kg over weight.

To be able to act on a longevity exercise plan you first need to be able to exercise.

…and this is where we come in.

So the real ‘mindful’ work is kind of simple.

Plan – make plans and times and stick to it, even if it is only 2 to 5 mins sitting and breathing. Completing a plan can give a wee dopamine hit…bonus.

Intent – don’t just flop around. Understand which muscles you are trying to exercise and concentrate on them. If they are whole body exercises concentrate on correct form. Everything is subtle meditation – take yourself out of ‘work think’ and just do 15 – 20 mins of what ever.

Then you are exactly who I am looking for.

I am not interested in 6 pack in 6 weeks – I want people to LIVE.

Live a life, play with kids, walk in bush and not be totally exhausted at days end…and less pain.

(pain may be zoom/live but I can often help)

These courses are for what society is drifting into – sedentary workers, ex athletes and the older people who are drifting into real sickness.

I can write gym programs but so can a million others.

I am interested in YOUR health!!! not what you look like….but feeling better will help you look better at yourself.
